Piazza del Quirinale
The obelisk that crowns the monumental fountain of the Dioscuri in Piazza del Quirinale, is a Roman obelisk built in the first century AD in red Aswan granite. It was originally located at the entrance of the Mausoleum of Augustus, along with the one currently visible in the Piazza dell’Esquilino.
Almost 30 m high with its base, the obelisk was found in 1527 along with its twin; re-buried at the Church of San Rocco, it was finally unearthed in 1781 during construction work. The current location dates back to1786 when, at the behest of Pope Pius VI, the architect Giovanni Antinori placed it among the statues of the Dioscuri, from the nearby Baths of Constantine, during the renovation of the fountain.
