The monument, commemorating the triumph of Vespasian and Titus over the Jews in 71 AD, was built by Emperor Domitian and dedicated in 81 AD. The inscription on the attic reads: Senatus/ Populusque Romanus/ divo Titi divi Vespasiani f(ilio) Vespasiano Augusto (“The Senate and the people of Rome to the divine Tutus Vespasianus Augustus, son of the divine Vespasian”).
The arch, with a single archway is on the via Sacra and its reliefs follow a homogeneous timeline, aimed at commemorating the victory in the bloody Judaic War, during which the Imperial destiny was predicted to Vespasian. The keystones depict Rome and the Genius of the Roman people, and above the archivolt the figure of Victory, with the triumphal procession depicted on all four sides (only the eastern side is still visible). Inside the archway are two large panels, depicting the salient moments of the triumph. On the northern side, the lictors precede the quadriga of Titus, crowned by the goddess Victory, while Rome itself holds the horses by the bit. The chariot is followed by the allegorical figures of the Roman people and Senate. On the south side, the initial moment of the procession is depicted, in front of the Triumphal door. On the litters are the spoils of war, among which the large Menorah – of which this is the first representation – is clearly distinguishable, as are the silver trumpets from the Temple of Jerusalem; these spoils were then displayed and preserved in the Forum of Nerva. At the centre of the coffered ceiling is the apotheosis of Titus.
