The church stands on the site where, according to tradition, St Paul was beheaded and at each of the three times his head bounced on the ground a spring of water emerged, one hot, one tepid and one cold.
Built around the sixth century, the church was rebuilt in the early seventeenth century by Giacomo della Porta, by order of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini.
The interior still features three fountains, enclosed by many shrines in black marble, placed on different levels, a testimony of the slope of the site. For many years, the water was distributed to the faithful because it was believed to be miraculous, but in 1950, due to pollution, the spring was closed. Near the first niche, there is the column where, according to tradition, St. Paul was bound before being beheaded.
