Outside the Aurelian Walls, in the place where according to tradition St.Paul was buried, early Christians built a small burial chapel, that immediately became the destination of worship and pilgrimage; it was transformed into a basilica by Emperor Constantine in 324 and enlarged as early as the end of the fourth century.
The church owes its current form to Pasquale Belli, who, along with other architects, rebuilt it between 1825 and 1854, after the terrible fire of 1823 that had almost completely destroyed the building. At the foot of the main altar, the Roman sarcophagus containing the remains of the apostle is partly visible and rests on a marble slab with the inscription Paulo Apostolo Martiri.
