Dedicated to the patron saints of Rome, the church, designed in 1938 on the site once occupied by a church dedicated to the Holy Apostles, was opened to the public only in 1955 as the outbreak of the Second World War had impeded progress in its construction.
Conceived as a visual reference point for the entire EUR district, the church is characterized not only for its size (a height of 72m and a dome with a diameter of 31 m), but also for its harmonious composition and purity of form.
Outside, the large statues of the saints Peter and Paul dominate the monumental staircase that joins the church square to Viale Europa below. Built on a rise, the church is visible from many, even far off, parts of the city.
