The autography of this version of St. John the Baptist, very similar to the one conserved in Kansas City, was supported by Longhi in 1927 and has since been generally accepted.
The light falls on the beautiful bare chest of the saint, reminiscent of classical statuary, wrapped in a large, red drape. Alongside, are placed objects that identify him; the baptizer’s bowl, cane and the sycamore tree are described in a natural, living plasticity.
The artist wanted to suggest a precise instant to represent the saint; one in which, as the result of a sudden recollection, an inner voice, the figure whirls his head and loses his balance, grabbing the cruciform cane.
