The work belongs to the early period of Caravaggio in Rome, around 1595. The young, repentant and converted Magdalene is sitting on a chair, resigned and in tears, with her hands resting on her lap and her long hair loose. Below, in a corner, a beautiful piece of still life is depicted: the transparent jar of ointment with which she refreshed the beloved Lord and her jewels, necklaces and pearl earrings, clearly alluding to vanity, abandoned at her feet. Pearls as attributes of Venus, not only refer to her past life but also to her new love of Christ. Salvific light falls on and redeems the repentant sinner. It is therefore the light of grace, but without the strong contrasts that characterize his later paintings.

This is part of the group of paintings considered to be carried out by Caravaggio during his first stay in Rome. The scene was inspired by the Cantico dei Cantici (Song of Songs) and is clearly separated into two parts; on the right the Virgin and Child are asleep against the backdrop of a lush and vivid landscape. To the left, St. Joseph is holding open a sheet of music in front of a sensual angel playing the violin, depicted from the back. The background landscape is barren and stony as it is waiting for salvation.
The score of the angel recognised by musicologists. has been identified as a motet composed by a Franco-Flemish musician, which incorporates some verses of the Song of Songs, where the Bridegroom and the Bride are identified as Jesus and Mary.
In the painting, the sweet violin music played by the angel is evoked by the spread of light, which has gradations of an extraordinary delicacy.
