Cappella Cerasi

In 1600 Monsignor Tiberio Cerasi, Treasurer General of the Apostolic Chamber, entrusted Caravaggio with the interior decoration of the left transept of his chapel with two side panels depicting the Crucifixion of Peter and the Conversion of Paul, the two saints to whom the chapel was dedicated.

crocifissione di san pietro

Its location in a particularly restricted ambience, which forced a close-up and narrow depiction of the scene, conditioned the interpretation of the theme by the artist who, although covering a very common theme in Christian art, with an earlier famous painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican, produced a composition of extraordinary originality. The figures, humble and depicted with extreme realism, are placed very close-up, completely covering the available space and emerging from obscurity illuminated by the light of salvation. They thus appear close to the observer, who is suddenly involved in this holy event.

conversione san paolo

The artist produced an original version on a tablet, still preserved by the Odescalchi family in Rome, in a sixteenth century style and with more traditional iconography. In the final version, Caravaggio brings the focal point of the scene closer, enlarging the figures and not leaving any space to any descriptive elements of the surroundings or the countryside or the traditional apparition of Christ, thus making the observer part of the story. The mystery of this divine event is also transmitted by the accentuated contrasts in light.
