The imposing Palazzo Corsini, once the property of the Riario family and, in the second half of the seventeenth century, residence of Queen Christina of Sweden and her coterie, lies on Via della Lungara, opposite the Villa Farnesina. On the back of the building, beyond the main courtyard used for performances on horseback, the great French-style park, commissioned by the nephews of Clement XII Corsini from 1741 to designs by Ferdinando Fuga, once stretched as far as the top of the Janiculum. The garden was transformed at the end of the nineteenth century into the Rome Botanical Gardens, run by the University La Sapienza: the gardens have several important collections of plants, especially rare or endangered species, grown in greenhouses and outdoors and monumental trees of exceptional value, with a total of about 3,500 specimens.

The botanical gardens contain both autochthonous species, such as the dwarf pine, white poplar and hornbeam thickets, and exotic species, including some very particular species, such as the Sicilian fir, which is endemic to Sicily, two species of sequoia originally from California and one dawn redwood originally from China. There is also a large Afghan palm tree, with its characteristic striped trunk and a beautiful camphor, an evergreen species originally from China and Japan. Because of its characteristics and position, the garden is also home to numerous species of animals, from hedgehogs to tree frogs, from monk parakeets to geckos, from green rose chafer beetles to green whip snakes.
