The Domus Aurea, luxurious residence of Emperor Nero and from which legend has it that he sang whilst watching as fire devastated Rome, became overgrown and in the 1930s Raffaele de Vico created a pleasant garden on the land above. Its appeal lies in the archaeological remains and the possibility of enjoying a spectacular close up view of the Colosseum. In the upper parts, plants typical to Roman gardens, such as acanthus, myrtle, pine, cypress and oak trees stand next to ruins of the Trajan Baths. The furnishings are monumental and refined: entrances are adorned with sculptures, several fountains, a great nymphaeum in ashlar tuff and travertine balustrades are accompanied by a fine Mediterranean garden, with native plants and beautiful examples of palm trees.

Among the exotic species to be admired in the park are examples of Japanese pagoda trees, false peppers, Canary palms and neem plants, a species known for its therapeutic properties, originally from India and Burma. Among the animals, in addition to the birds and mammals, are numerous species of butterfly, including the yellow swallowtail, cabbage white, bath white, small cabbage white, peacock butterfly, Red Admiral, painted lady, anglewing, southern comma and wall brown.
