The public promenade for the people of Rome until 1908 was designed in Napoleonic times and saw completion in the 1830s under the supervision of Giuseppe Valadier. After devastation during the siege of Rome in 1849, architects Luigi Poletti and Joachim Ersoch returned the gardens to the enjoyment of the city. Even today, the visitor will notice the imprint given by the two architects in the botanical and landscape style that nevertheless respects the traditional symmetries for the avenues and plazas established by Valadier, who was also the architect of the Casina named after him and today a very popular restaurant. 230 busts of famous Italian men placed along the avenues and among flowerbeds form a “Pantheon” of national remembrance, which is crowned by the view over Piazza del Popolo from the balcony of Piazzale Napoleon I.

From a naturalist viewpoint, this walk is almost unique, together with Villa Borghese, especially as regards the fauna. The plants present, of absolute significance, include various palms, including fan palms, Canary palms, date palms and dwarf palms, which, with numerous beech trees and domestic pines, characterise the area. There are also trees of significant size present, including the Lebanese cedar in the vicinity of the water clock, and numerous other species of trees, such as the silver fir, downy oak, false camphor, gingko, crepe myrtle, Cycas, plane tree and horse-chestnut.
