The Villa is a place of joy and study and overlooks the city below in the healthy air of Pincio Hill, the most popular place during the Roman Empire for building sumptuous residences. Cardinal Ferdinando de Medici lavished his family’s Florentine taste on the villa with an amazing collection of sculptures. The Villa, home of the French Academy for the last two centuries, hosts art exhibitions and cultural activities in the park, where there is an exquisite Italian garden by the architect Bartolomeo Ammannati, who worked there from 1576. The loggia of the building overlooks the central parterre, fountain and an obelisk, flanked on the left by a geometrically formed garden and on the right by the Wood leading to the “Parnassus”, an artificial hill recalling the mountain sacred to Apollo and the Muses.
Like the walk along the Pincio, villa Medici is also closely connected to Villa Borghese from a naturalist viewpoint. Its gardens, which are made up of geometric flower-beds, include cypresses, oaks and various fruit trees and a wide variety of maritime pines, which are unusual for this sort of area. The animals living here include squirrels, which can often be seen climbing up the tree trunks with surprising agility, and numerous ring-necked parakeets, originally from Asia, which have been colonising this villa for years, and also all the other green areas of the city.
