An ancient tradition ties the building of the Baths of Diocletian to the great persecution promoted by the emperor Diocletian; all Christian soldiers were forced to hard labour in the construction of the largest thermal baths of the ancient world. Of those countless martyrs memory was preserved when, at the behest of Pope Pius IV, the frigidarium, the room with the cold baths, was transformed by Michelangelo into the Basilica of Santa Maria degli angeli e dei martiri cristiani. Nearly half of the original surface area (13 hectares) of the Baths have been preserved and tell the story of the transformation from a place of pleasure to a place of prayer and meditation, housing not only the largest Basilica but also the Certosa with its two cloisters for the Carthusian monks.
