The basilica was founded by the transformation of a number of parts of the Diocletian Baths and is dedicated to the memory of the Christian martyrs who had been forced to work to the extreme for the construction of the baths. The plans for the renovation project were entrusted to Michelangelo: the frigidarium and the four rooms that opened from its sides were used to form a unit in the shape of a Greek cross with three entrances, the fourth arm was used for the sanctuary apse, originally a part of the pool (natatio) outside. The relics of Christian martyrs, forced labourers in stone quarries or in the manufacture of bricks, are housed in the Chapel of the Relics, built in 1742 by Cardinal Camillo Cybo, the then holder of the basilica.
