Praxedes, one of the two daughters, with Pudenziana, of Senator Pudens, converted to Christianity during the persecutions of Emperor Antoninus Pius. The church, which already existed in the fifth century, was rebuilt in 822 by Pope Paschal I, who transferred the relics of two thousand martyrs there from the catacombs of St. Alexander. On the floor in the centre of the nave, a porphyry disk covers the well where Praxedes hid the bones of the persecuted martyrs. Along the right aisle is the Chapel of S Zenone, built in the ninth century by Paschal I to house the relics of St. Zeno, the martyr from Nicomedia (today Turkey) living in the fourth century. In the crypt four sarcophagi, one of which contains the bodies of Praxedes and sister Pudenziana, are preserved.
