According to tradition, the church was founded by the Emperor Constantine on the site of the martyrdom of the Saint. Placido – his name before conversion – was a Roman soldier in the service of the Emperor Trajan (second century). Having refused to worship pagan gods, he was thrown together with his wife and two children into a furnace in the form of bull from which the bodies were extracted intact. The façade, preceded by a portico with columns with Ionic capitals, is crowned by a deer’s head and a cross, the two elements reminiscent of Jesus’ appearance to the saint during his conversion, which occurred during a hunting trip. The relics of Eustachian are kept inside an urn under the main altar.
