The church owes its name to the Roman temple, dedicated to Minerva Khalkidhiki, on whose ruins the church was built. Opened for worship from the mid-fourteenth century by the Dominicans, it houses the tombs of saints and celebrities (including the popes Clement VII and Leo X), and the Carafa chapel decorated with a cycle of frescoes by Filippino Lippi with scenes from the life St. Thomas Aquinas (1488-93). The fourth chapel on the right side is dedicated to St. Peter Martyr, who is depicted on the altar; Peter was a Dominican preacher who fought against heresy. He is buried in the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio in Milan The church also houses the remains of St. Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the Church, in a sarcophagus under the main altar, and those of the painter Fra Angelico, the patron saint of artists.
