The Crypta Balbi is part of the historic centre of Rome where a vast ancient porch, the Crypta of Balbus, once stood next to the theatre that Lucio Cornelio Balbo had built in 13 BC.
The museum route includes a number of buildings, reflecting the various historical phases of the area; from the constructions by Balbo to the ruralisation of the urban landscape in the fifth century and the medieval construction of churches and houses to the building of the Conservatory of Santa Caterina della Rosa, which, between the sixteenth and seventeenth century, occupied most of the area. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the intense period of transformation that changed the face of Rome from the ancient world to medieval and modern times.
