The church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin was founded in the seventh century on the site of the Ara Maxima Erculi, sanctuary of Hercules, the guardian of the trade routes that connected Rome to the hinterland. The church was designated in the eighth century to the Byzantine monks and because of the decoration carried out, the building was named “Cosmedin” from the Greek word kosmidion (ornament)-
The interior houses the choir, in the middle of the nave, the Bishop’s “cathedra”, the Gothic altar ciborium (by Deodato Cosma) and the altar of red granite at the rear of the apse dating back to 1123.
In the porch, added in the twelfth century, is the famous Mouth of Truth, which according to popular tradition bites the hands of liars, but which probably in Roman times was nothing more than a mask on the lid of a well or a manhole cover.
