Scala dell’Arce Capitolina, 14
Every day 08:00-18:00. Free entry.
The church stands on the ruins of the Temple of Juno Moneta, the highest peak of the Capitoline Hill. Its name refers to a legend that the church would be built on the exact spot where a Sibyl announced the coming of the son of God to the Emperor Augustus. The first church dates back to the sixth century and a monastery, a market and a small residential neighbourhood were built next to it. The interior has three naves with round arches and slightly protruding transept; there are three apse chapels. The coffered wooden ceiling is of the sixteenth century and the cosmatesco floor – named after the Cosmati brothers, well-known marble handlers in the twelfth century – is completely preserved. The tombstone inserts are thirteenth century. The staircase of 124 marble steps was built in the fourteenth century in thanksgiving for the end of the plague.
