A round temple dedicated to Hercules, built in marble at the end of the second century BC once stood in the Forum Boarium, the market area in the old river port of Rome. In the twelfth century the temple was converted into a church, dedicated to Santo Stefano, with the addition of a new roof, a bell tower and the construction of a wall between the columns of the portico. In the sixteenth century, the church was called Santo Stefano delle Carrozze, after the name of the street; it was dedicated to Santa Maria del Sole by the seventeenth century, after the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary with a sunbeam discovered near the monument on the banks Tiber. At the end of the nineteenth century the church was deconsecrated and the remains of the ancient Roman temple were brought to light.
