Erected in Heliopolis by Ramses II in the thirteenth century BC and brought to Rome to the sanctuary of Isis in the Campus Martius, it was found in 1883 in Via di Sant’Ignazio, near the tribune of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. In 1887 it was restored and used for the memorial to the fallen of the Battle of Dogali in Eritrea in 1887. It was placed on a plinth by Francesco Azzurri, reaching a height of 16.30 m, in front of the entrance to Termini station. In 1925 it was moved to the current location in Via Luigi Einaudi in front of the Baths of Diocletian and in 1937 at the base decorated with the Lion of Judah in gilded bronze, captured in Addis Ababa during the Abyssinian campaign. After World War II the bronze sculpture was returned to Ethiopia.
