The Islam, the third great monotheist religion, together with Judaism and Christianism, was born in Arabia in the VII century and it was widespread through military conquers with a great rapidity until it covered vast areas of Asia and Africa. Its foundation is the Coran; this sacred book is considered infallible since it was revealed by God (Allah) and by his prophet Mohammed. The mosque is the place of worship for Muslims.

The greatest mosque in Europe, designed by the architect Portoghesi, is to be found in Rome at the feed of the Parioli Mounts in a very green area. It was inaugurated in 1995, it has a modern but at the same time traditional structure with its curved forms. Inside the great prayer room with lots of threefold columns recalling a forest or an oasis the architect has searched for suffused light effects to better enable contemplation. Discrete colours and the delicate decorations in glassed ceramic create an atmosphere of mystic enchanting. The koranic theme that is here repeated is “Allah is light”. The building occupies 30 thousand m2 of a site that can host until 12 thousand followers. Apart from being a worshipping place dedicated to prayer (on Fridays and during Ramadan) and to the listening of the preaches of the imam, it is also an aggregation point for providing cultural services and assistance to the Muslim population of Rome.
