At the gates of Formia, on the via Appia, is an imposing tomb in a suggestive Mediterranean garden, the funeral garden, delimited by a tall fence. Even in St. Paul’s time, this monument stood out because of its imposing nature and richness of decorations. The building is a large die surmounted by a cone-shaped drum which concealed two covered chambers. The tomb, used over the centuries as a military post and farmers’ hideaway, has always been of interest to travellers and academics who have attributed it to the famous orator and politician Cicero, who had a villa here. Plutarch mentions it, describing it in the Life of Cicero as “pleasant for a summer’s rest, being exposed to very pleasant Etesian winds”. The orator was killed in Formia itself, by followers of his rival Mark Antony, on 7 December, 43 BC.
