Velletri

You are along the route: TRAVELLING TOWARDS ROME. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. PAUL

The Appian Way and the Pontine Marshes

Via Appia Antica, next to the crossroad of via dei Cinque Archi.
Always visible.

In this area, the via Appia does not reach hill on which Velletri is located, but runs along the Pontine plain, where the particular position, subject to periodical and seasonal flooding, made significant underground drainage works necessary, with the construction of ballasts and some bridges crossing the streams dotting the area.
Close to the Via Appia Antica, at the crossroad with via Soleluna, passed the ancient rest station of Ad Sponsas (today Cisterna di Latina) – where the landscape is full of vineyards, ancient tombs and great temples – you can find a building dedicated to Apollo and Diana, or perhaps Cybele, of which the remaining parts are still visible.
The most famous bridge in this territory is Ponte di Mele, close to the crossroad of the homonymous way and via Appia Antica: thanks to the construction of this structure in tuff it had not been necessary to modify the perfect linear road.
