A tradition dating back to the early fourteenth century identified this as the site of the martyrdom of the Apostle Peter. Although the hypothesis, proven to be unfounded, had immediate opponents, Sixtus IV decided to entrust the reconstruction of the church here to the Franciscan Amedeo Menez de Sylva in preparation for the Jubilee of 1475. This was part of Sixtus’s plans for the renewal of the city, but also hides the ideological intent to reconnect to the sense of poverty and charity of the early Christian church, embodied by the first Pope. Work began thanks to donations from King Louis XI of France and later from the Spanish royal family. Pope Alexander VI consecrated the church in the Jubilee of 1500. The Transfiguration by Raphael, originally placed on the high altar, has been in the Vatican since 1797.
