In the middle of the right aisle lies the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, where the tabernacle built by Bernini in correspondence with the underlying tomb of St. Peter can be admired. The tomb was opened to the public at the beginning of the Holy Year 1675 during which one and a half million people came in pilgrimage. Inspired by the temple of Bramante in San Pietro in Montorio, it is a fine example of monumental goldsmithing offering contrasts of gold, silver and the blue of lapis lazuli. On either side, there are two large angels in gilded bronze, one absorbed in prayer, the other facing the congregation. The chapel is decorated with gilded stucco and the entrance has an iron gate designed by Borromini. The precious marbles of the altar and the altarpiece of the Trinity by Pietro da Cortona are of special note.
