The Passetto di Borgo is a walkway connecting Castel Sant’Angelo to the Papal See, and is testimony to the military function assigned the former mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian from the Middle Ages onwards. In some places the multiple layers of masonry work, carried out up to its consolidation by Pope Alexander VI for the Jubilee of 1500, are clearly visible. Pope Borgia, in whose tradition Jubilees are inaugurated by the opening of the Porte Sante (Holy Doors), was responsible for building a path with battlements, which was the salvation of Clement VII during the terrible Sack of Rome in 1527, above the fourteenth century covered Passetto.
