Pope Sixtus IV had a special fondness for this church. Not only did he order its reconstruction for the Jubilee of 1475, but he also wanted to protect it with two towers (which no longer exist), built close to today’s Porta del Popolo. After having granted the church to the Augustinians of the Lombardy Congregation, he chose this as the location for his family’s burial chapel, which he visited at least every Saturday. The church has three naves, topped by an octagonal dome supported by a drum, the first example of its kind in Rome. Of the works that followed, the most important was carried out by Bernini on the facade, between 1655 and 1659. The icon of the “Madonna of the People,” (a model for all the artists’ workshops, especially during Jubilees, when they would be reproduced in great abundance) can be seen inside the church.
