The stairway is the scenic link between the slopes of the Pincio, with the church of Trinità dei Monti, and piazza di Spagna below. The idea of overcoming the steep slope up the hill from the square using a stairway was documented as early as 1559, but the initial designs were only produced in 1660, thanks to the estate of the Frenchman Stefano Gueffier. A dispute then arose between the French and the Church as to the ownership of the area, delaying the start of the works, entrusted to the Roman architect Francesco De Sanctis, winner of a competition commissioned by Clement XI, until 1723. Completed for the Holy Year in 1725, the stairway is tripartite, with the stairs alternatively concave and convex, creating a strong scenic impact.
