The church of San Vitale originates from a chapel dating from the fourth century AD dedicated to the twin Saints Gervasio and Protasio. We know that after the murder of their parents, they decided to sell all their family assets and give the money to the poor. Denounced as Christians, they were condemned and martyred. The building was completely rebuilt for the Jubilee of 1475 by Pope Sixtus IV, whose emblem can still be seen on the entrance. In 1859 Pius IX ordered the construction of the entrance stairway that descends into the church from the raised level of the road following the construction of Via Nazionale.
