Scala dell’Arce Capitolina, 14
Among the most important urban works of the fourteenth century, a dark period in the history of Rome, the steps were a votive offering to the Virgin for ending the plague of 1348. For the Holy Year of 1350 this was the symbolic instrument by means of which the Church of Rome appropriated this site of secular and municipal power. At the same time, the orientation of the church above was changed so that it longer faced towards the Forum, but towards Christian Rome. Built by Lorenzo di Simone Andreozzi, at the time it was perceived as a truly holy staircase by the citizens of Rome, who climbed the 124 steps on their knees in anticipation of miraculous events. The name Aracoeli, altar of heaven, comes from the legend of the apparition to Augustus of a virgin on an altar, later interpreted as a pre-Christian sign of the birth of the church.
