The dome, which represents the Jesuit saints’ Vision of Paradise was revealed to the public on April 14, in the Holy Year 1675. The Genoese painter, Giovanni Battista Gaulli, in exchange for 14,000 scudi had pledged to finish it by Christmas of 1674, executing by 1682, as per the contract, the vaults of the nave and transept. The whole iconography was executed under the expert supervision of the Superior General of the Jesuits, Giovanni Paolo Oliva. The architecture of the church, the first to be built after the sack of Rome, reflects the dictates of the Counter Reformation. The interior decoration, in particular the fresco of the nave with the Triumph of the Name of Jesus, attracts the viewer in a vortex where everything is seemingly in the making and happening before the eyes.
