Sallustiano Obelisk

You are along the route: EGYPT THE EMPIRE THE POPES. THE CITY OF OBELISKS

Obelisco Sallustiano

Piazza Trinità dei Monti
Always visible.

The obelisk that stands on top of the stairway of the Trinità dei Monti came from the Sallustiani Gardens. Attempts at relocating the obelisk by Sixtus V and Alexander VII were unsuccessful, as were those of Clement XII, who, in 1734, had had it moved to the Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs) in order to erect it in front of the Lateran Basilica. The obelisk was left abandoned for many years during negotiations to transport it to Paris. Finally Pope Pius VI, despite the chorus of controversy and concerns from the Minim Fathers of the Trinity for the facade of their church, commissioned architect Giovanni Antinori to make plans to raise the obelisk, which was accomplished in 1789.
