You are along the route: THE ETERNAL CHALLENGE. BERNINI VERSUS BORROMINI
In 1658, Cardinal Camillo Pamphili, the nephew of Pope Innocent X, commissioned Bernini for the renovation of the church of Sant’Andrea a Monte Cavallo (Quirinal Hill), annexed to the novitiate of the Compagnia di Gesù. For the new building, completed in 1678, the artist developed a oval plan that permitted the dilation of the small interior space. The effect was then further increased by the clever use of lighting and stucco decoration, following the idea of harmonious integration of all artistic techniques often practised by Bernini.
The façade is characterized by a play of surfaces and geometries in which the concavity of the two side wings welcome the faithful and link the church to the surrounding buildings.
