In preparation for the Jubilee of 1650, Pope Innocent X Pamphilj commissioned Borromini to restore the ancient basilica of San Giovanni. It was a task of great prestige but at the same time, difficult to implement because of the constraints the pontiff imposed gradually on the architect. Borromini, in fact, had planned a complete makeover of the church, which he then had to limit to the aisles and the nave for which, moreover, he could not create the vault because of the Pope’s request to keep the sixteenth-century ceiling of church. The artist nevertheless enriched the space with the careful use of light and with new pillars divided by niches that made use of a number of the columns of the aisles; in the upper part, windows alternated with oval frames with floral motifs in which he left the fragments of the ancient masonry of the original Constantinian basilica visible, almost like relics.
