On April 3, 1537, Easter Tuesday, the early companions of Ignatius held a theological discussion in the castle in the presence of Pope Paul III. The pontiff gave them permission to go to Jerusalem, giving his blessing and exhorting them to continue in their intentions. He gave them alms of 60 ducats and his cardinals and the other people present gave a further 150 ducats. To those who were priests, the pope gave the right to confess and absolve, even in instances that were normally the domain of bishops.
