In 1574, Pope Gregory XIII granted the church and the adjacent building to the Jesuits as the seat of the Germanic College, a pontifical seminary for secular clergy sent to Rome to complete their religious education. Founded in 1552, in 1580 it joined the newborn Hungarian College with the aim of training the clergy for central and northern Europe. Among the training activities of the College, particular attention was placed on music, creating a solid tradition.
