In the middle of the sixteenth century, the palace was the seat of the Spanish Ambassador. A number of events involving St. Ignatius are connected with the palace. Whilst the Marquis of Aguilar was ambassador, Ignazio went to visit the palace and the Marquis pointed out that some suspected that, behind the appearance of poverty and humility, he was seeking ecclesiastical sinecures or rank. Ignazio removed his cap and making sign of the cross, vowed not to accept any rank that was offered outside the Society. In 1544 he was appointed as confessor in the home of Dona Leonor Osorio, the wife of the new Spanish ambassador and who helped him in his apostolic work. During this time, Ignazio quelled an altercation between two Spanish gentlemen regarding priorities in table seating.
