In 1534 Filippo went to Rome and settled in the Sant’Eustachio district in the house of a fellow citizen. To earn board and lodging, Filippo gave grammar lessons to his sons, Michele and Ippolito. His remuneration consisted of a simple bag of wheat, which thanks to an agreement with a baker, became a loaf of bread, which Filippo seasoned with a few olives. The room where he lived was very small and was very simply furnished with a bed, a table and a cord hanging on the wall that served as a cupboard. One of the two children would later become a diocesan priest and the other a Carthusian monk. The young Filippo went daily to pray in the adjacent church.
