The College in Rome was established by Ignazio to cover schooling from primary to university education. In 1560, the permanent seat was established in this palace, where the Marquise Della Valle, niece of Pope Paul IV, had adapted a monastery. In 1574 the Jesuit fathers presented Pope Gregory XIII with a memorandum in order to obtain new resources. The pope took the fledgling institution to heart and assigned it several annuities. The renovation of the building began in 1581. Courses were inaugurated on October 28 of the same year of 1582. From 1576 to 1594 San Roberto Bellarmino lived here and San Luigi Gonzaga, San Giovanni Berchmans and Beato Antonio Baldinucci lived here during their studies.
