The House of Santa Marta was founded by Ignazio in 1543 to accommodate “unhappily married” women or those who were “married in public sin” who wanted to rehabilitate. A congregation of lay people administered the house and appointed a woman to run it. Father Ignazio had a purely spiritual involvement. In 1545 Isabel Roser, the benefactor of Ignatius in Barcelona, took charge of running the House. In 1552 Father Polanco estimated that more than 300 women had been redeemed from vice. After the Saint’s death, the house became a convent. In 1560 the convent and the church went to the Augustinian nuns.
