Via del Gesù

The street takes its name from the nearby church, Chiesa del Gesù. The second seat of the Roman College was located (1551-1557) halfway along the street behind the rear tribune of today’s Church of Santo Stefano del Cacco. Chairs in philosophy and theology were inaugurated in 1553, the first academic degrees (doctorate in theology) were awarded in 1556 and the earliest renewal of vows in 1557. At the end of the road turn right towards via del Piè di Marmo. More or less at this point, Ignazio rented two houses in 1552 as the seat of the newly founded German College. The following year the college found larger premises between the churches of Santo Stefano del Cacco and San Giovanni, in Piazza della Pigna.

In 1551 Ignazio commissioned architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio to design a church for the Society. Michelangelo redesigned the layout in 1554, but these plans remained on paper. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese financed the works in 1561 and appointed Vignola to supervise them (1568-1575). After Vignola’s death, the construction passed to Giacomo Della Porta, who reworked the design of the facade and designed the dome. The grandiose fresco by Baciccio, Triumph of the name of Jesus, is in the vault of the nave. In the left transept is the Chapel of St. Ignatius by Andrea Pozzo. The saint’s remains rest under the altar, in an urn in gilded bronze.

The rooms are on the top floor of the house built by Ignazio and Father Codacio between 1543 and 1544. The modest apartment was divided as follows: a room for the reception of guests, a small study and bedroom, a chapel and a room for Ignazio’s attendant. From this house, Ignazio governed the Society for twelve years, attended to correspondence, wrote his second Formula of the Institute (1550) and completed the drafting of the Constitutions (1549-1553). He died here on July 31, 1556. In 1599, the Casa Professa, in which the four rooms were preserved, was built. Many letters, documents and memorabilia related to the saint, including his small desk, a copy of the first edition of Exercitia Spiritualia (1548) and his cloak and sandals are conserved here. A corridor outside the rooms, decorated around 1680 by Andrea Pozzo, celebrates the saint.
