In 1537 Pope Paul III granted the church to Ignazio. At the time, the main scourges of the city were prostitution and poverty. At the sight of this pitiful spectacle and to take many girls from poverty and the danger to which they were exposed by the dishonesty of their mothers, Ignazio founded the Conservatory of St. Catherine Rose, also known as the “Compagnia delle Vergini Miserabili Pericolanti” in 1546 and built a neighbouring building to accommodate orphans and give them a good education. Other promoters with Ignazio include Filippo Neri. In 1560 Ignazio suggested to Cardinal Federico Cesi that they rebuild the church and dedicate it to St. Catherine of Alexandria.
