The Jesuits settled on the Quirinal Hill as from 1565, thanks to a donation by the Bishop of Tivoli granting them the use of the parish church of Sant’Andrea. Shortly after, a duchess granted the Society a number of neighbouring properties, making it possible to build a new seat for the Novitiate. The church was built under the supervision of Jesuit architect Giovanni Tristano da Ferrara and consecrated in 1568 by Cardinal Marcantonio Colonna. Between 1658 and 1678 it was rebuilt to designs by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. San Roberto Bellarmino died here in 1621 and the remains of St. Stanislaus Kostka, the Polish Jesuit are worshipped here.
