Walking along the left-hand side of Senate Palace in the Campidoglio, there is a column on which the famous Capitoline Wolf is depicted, a copy of the bronze original in the Museums. Legend tells that the twins Romulus and Remus, born out of the love between a Vestal virgin, sworn to chastity, and the god Mars, were abandoned in a basket in the river Tiber. The basket got stuck in a fig-tree at the foot of the Palatine hill, where a wolf found and breastfed the new-born babies, saving them from death. This incredible happening, which led to the foundation of Rome by Romulus, made the wolf the symbol of the city, as it still is today.
