The fountain was commissioned by Pope Sixtus V and designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1589. Initially positioned right in front of the entrance to the church of Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli, it was moved because the voices of the people who gathered around the fountain caused disturbance to religious ceremonies. It is said that the Pope himself ordered the large donkey’s ears to be added to the fountain, to admonish the Romans who gathered there to chat amongst themselves.
