Wandering among the alleys of old Jewish ghetto, turning onto via di S. Maria de’ Calderari, we encounter a surprise. In 1468, Lorenzo Manilio, the cultured owner of a building on the street, ordered some fragments of classical sculptures to be applied to the wall: next to a Greek stele depicting a fawn and its young, there is the silhouette of a lion pouncing on an antelope. In Christian symbolism, a lion pouncing on an animal represents God’s wrath towards the infidels. These are probably the remains of funeral monuments originating from the Via Appia.
