The cat of Palazzo Grazioli

You are along the route: THE ZOO OF WONDERS. STONE ANIMALS

Via della Gatta
Always visible.

Palazzo Grazioli looks out over via del Plebiscito, a sixteenth century building by Giacomo della Porta on behalf of the Duke of the Grazioli.
A marble cat was placed on the first cornice of the building, found in the nearby ancient Roman sanctuary to the goddess Isis, to whom cats were sacred.
However, tradition states that the statue is a memorial to cat who, by meowing, enabled a mother to save her small son, who was in danger of falling from the cornice. It is also told that a large treasure is apparently hidden in the mysterious place towards which the animal’s eyes are staring, but numerous attempts to find it have always been in vain.
