In 1517, the street was called via dell’Orso, a reference to the ancient Albergo dell’Orso (Bear’s Inn), which according to some was thus named due to the sign outside with two bears and according to others after one of the owners, Baccio dell’Orso. Others still believe that it is due to a marble carving in a wall outside number 87, which is still there. In truth, one needs a good imagination to see a bear carved in it; it is actually a lion attacking a wild boar. It is probable that to most people, the lion appeared so misshapen and unwieldy as to be a bear.
